Job Description

As a Junior Officer in the Deck department of a cruise ship or vessel, you will play a vital role in supporting the safe and efficient operation of the vessel. Working under the supervision of senior officers, you will assist in various navigational, operational, and safety-related tasks. Here is a detailed job description for the position of Junior Officer:

1. Navigational Duties:
– Stand watch on the bridge, maintaining a vigilant lookout for navigational hazards, monitoring the vessel’s position, speed, and course.
– Assist in planning and executing safe navigation, considering factors such as weather conditions, traffic, and navigational aids.
– Record voyage details, including courses steered, distances traveled, and any other relevant information in navigational logs.

2. Safety and Emergency Response:
– Contribute to the implementation and enforcement of safety procedures and regulations to ensure the well-being of the vessel, passengers, and crew.
– Participate in safety drills and training sessions to maintain preparedness for emergencies.
– Inspect and maintain life-saving appliances and firefighting equipment, ensuring their proper functioning and readiness.

3. Deck Operations:
– Support deck officers in various deck operations, such as mooring, anchoring, and tender operations.
– Assist in cargo handling and stowage activities, ensuring proper documentation and compliance with safety regulations.
– Collaborate with deck crew members to maintain the cleanliness, maintenance, and organization of the vessel’s exterior.

4. Bridge Equipment and Systems:
– Learn to operate and maintain navigation and communication equipment, including radar, GPS, echo sounder, and radio systems.
– Familiarize yourself with the vessel’s navigation systems and assist in their proper functioning.
– Contribute to routine maintenance and testing of bridge equipment to identify and rectify any issues.

5. Documentation and Compliance:
– Maintain accurate records and documentation related to navigational activities, including voyage records, passage plans, and logbook entries.
– Ensure compliance with international maritime regulations, company policies, and safety procedures.
– Assist in conducting safety inspections and audits to identify and rectify any non-compliance issues.

Requirements:
– Valid Officer of the Watch (OOW) or higher-level deck officer certificate, as per international maritime standards.
– Previous experience as a deck cadet or equivalent is preferred.
– Basic knowledge of navigational practices, including chart plotting, radar operation, and collision avoidance techniques.
– Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of navigation and communication equipment.
– Understanding of safety procedures, emergency response, and firefighting techniques.
– Proficiency in using navigation software and electronic chart systems.
– Good communication skills to effectively interact with crew members and follow instructions from senior officers.
– Ability to remain calm and make decisions in high-pressure situations.
– Flexibility to work in a dynamic and demanding environment, including extended periods at sea and irregular working hours.
