Job Description

As a Junior 4th Engineer in the Engine section, you will work under the supervision of senior engineers and contribute to the smooth operation and maintenance of the vessel’s engine room and machinery. Here is a detailed job description for the position of Junior 4th Engineer in the Engine section:

1. Engine Room Operations:
– Assist in the operation and monitoring of the vessel’s engine room equipment, including engines, boilers, generators, pumps, and auxiliary machinery.
– Perform routine checks, inspections, and tests on engine room systems to ensure their proper functioning.
– Monitor fuel consumption, temperatures, pressures, and other parameters to maintain optimal performance and efficiency.
– Assist in troubleshooting and rectifying equipment malfunctions or abnormalities under the guidance of senior engineers.

2. Maintenance and Repairs:
– Assist in carrying out preventive and corrective maintenance tasks on engine room machinery and equipment.
– Clean, lubricate, and perform minor repairs on engines, pumps, valves, and other components.
– Assist in overhauling, replacing, or repairing engine parts as necessary.
– Keep accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment performance, and spare parts inventory.

3. Safety and Compliance:
– Adhere to safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment in the engine room.
– Follow all relevant regulations, standards, and company policies related to engine room operations and maintenance.
– Participate in safety drills and emergency response exercises.
– Contribute to the implementation of safety and environmental management systems.

4. Watchkeeping Duties:
– Assist in maintaining a watch in the engine room as assigned, monitoring equipment and systems.
– Report any abnormalities or deviations from standard operating conditions to senior engineers.
– Follow watchkeeping schedules and ensure smooth transitions between shifts.
– Familiarize yourself with emergency procedures and response protocols.

5. Documentation and Reporting:
– Maintain accurate logs, records, and reports related to engine room operations, maintenance, and fuel consumption.
– Assist in the preparation of technical reports and documentation for inspections and audits.
– Update inventory records and assist in the procurement of spare parts and supplies as directed.

6. Continuous Learning and Development:
– Actively engage in ongoing training and professional development opportunities to enhance technical knowledge and skills.
– Stay updated with new technologies, regulations, and best practices in marine engineering.
– Seek guidance from senior engineers and actively participate in knowledge sharing within the team.

Requirements:
– Degree or diploma in Marine Engineering or a related field from a recognized institution.
– Certificate of Competency (COC) as a Marine Engineer Officer of the required level.
– Relevant seagoing experience as a Junior Engineer or Engine Cadet.
– Familiarity with engine room systems, machinery, and equipment.
– Basic knowledge of marine engineering principles, including thermodynamics, mechanics, and electrical systems.
– Understanding of safety regulations and procedures in the maritime industry.
– Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
– Good communication and interpersonal skills.
– Physically fit and able to work in a demanding maritime environment.
– Familiarity with relevant software and computer systems used for maintenance and reporting is a plus.
