Job Description

As a Steward in the Galley section, your primary responsibility is to support the smooth operations of the galley and pantry areas on board a vessel. You will assist in the preparation and service of meals, maintain cleanliness and organization, and ensure guest satisfaction. Here is a detailed job description for the position of Steward in the Galley section:

1. Galley Assistance:
– Assist the Chef and Cooks in the preparation and presentation of meals, following recipes and guidelines.
– Ensure timely delivery of food and beverages to the dining areas, maintaining proper temperature and quality.
– Assist in setting up and organizing the buffet stations, food displays, and beverage stations.
– Prepare and garnish food items, such as salads, sandwiches, and desserts, as directed by the culinary team.

2. Cleanliness and Organization:
– Maintain cleanliness and sanitation in the galley area, following food safety and hygiene guidelines.
– Clean and sanitize kitchen equipment, utensils, and work surfaces regularly.
– Wash and sanitize dishes, glassware, cutlery, and other food service items.
– Dispose of waste and empty trash receptacles, ensuring proper waste management.

3. Guest Service and Assistance:
– Provide friendly and attentive service to guests in the dining areas, assisting with their requests and inquiries.
– Clear tables and reset them for the next guests, ensuring a clean and welcoming dining environment.
– Assist in the replenishment of food and beverage stations, ensuring availability and cleanliness.
– Respond promptly to guest feedback or complaints, taking appropriate actions to address their concerns.

4. Inventory Management:
– Assist in the receipt, storage, and inventory management of food supplies, beverages, and pantry items.
– Assist in the rotation of perishable and non-perishable items, ensuring proper stock rotation and minimizing wastage.
– Maintain accurate records of stock levels, assisting in conducting regular stock checks as required.
– Notify the supervisor or senior staff of any shortages or discrepancies in inventory.

5. Hygiene and Safety:
– Adhere to strict hygiene and sanitation standards in the galley area, following food safety regulations and guidelines.
– Practice proper personal hygiene, including handwashing and wearing appropriate protective clothing.
– Comply with all safety procedures and guidelines, ensuring a safe working environment for yourself and others.
– Report any hygiene or safety issues to the supervisor or senior staff immediately.

6. Teamwork and Communication:
– Collaborate with the galley team, including Chefs, Cooks, and other Stewards, to ensure smooth operations.
– Communicate effectively with the team and other departments, conveying information and assisting with coordination.
– Assist in training and mentoring new Stewards, sharing knowledge and best practices.
– Participate in team meetings and briefings, providing updates and suggestions for improvement.

Requirements:
– Previous experience as a Steward or in a similar role in the galley section, preferably in the maritime or hospitality industry.
– Basic knowledge of food preparation and service techniques.
– Familiarity with hygiene and sanitation regulations, food safety guidelines, and cleanliness standards.
– Good communication and interpersonal skills, with a friendly and service-oriented attitude.
– Ability to work well in a team and follow instructions from senior staff.
– Attention to detail and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
– Flexibility to work in shifts and adapt to changing schedules.
– Physical stamina to stand for extended periods and lift heavy objects when necessary.
– Willingness to comply with all safety and security procedures.
– Basic knowledge of English is usually required, and additional language skills may be advantageous.
