Job Description

As the Second Officer onboard a cruise ship or vessel, you will play a vital role in the deck department. Assisting the Chief Officer, you will be responsible for various navigational and operational tasks, ensuring the safety and efficiency of the vessel. Here is a detailed job description for the position of Second Officer:

1. Navigation and Watchkeeping:
– Stand watch on the bridge, maintaining a vigilant lookout for navigational hazards and monitoring the vessel’s position, speed, and course.
– Execute navigational plans as directed by the Chief Officer or Master, making necessary adjustments based on weather conditions, traffic, and other factors.
– Maintain accurate navigational logs, recording voyage details, courses steered, and any other relevant information.

2. Safety and Emergency Response:
– Assist in implementing and enforcing safety procedures and regulations to ensure the safety of the vessel, passengers, and crew.
– Conduct regular safety drills and training sessions for crew members to maintain their preparedness for emergencies.
– Monitor and maintain life-saving appliances and firefighting equipment, ensuring their proper functioning and availability.

3. Bridge Equipment and Systems:
– Operate and maintain navigation and communication equipment, such as radar, GPS, echo sounder, and radio systems.
– Ensure the proper functioning of navigational aids, including charts, publications, and electronic navigation systems.
– Conduct routine maintenance and testing of bridge equipment to identify and resolve any issues.

4. Deck Operations:
– Assist in the planning and execution of deck operations, including mooring, anchoring, and tender operations.
– Supervise deck crew members during routine tasks, such as painting, cleaning, and maintenance of the vessel’s exterior.
– Participate in the loading and unloading of cargo, ensuring proper stowage and securing of the vessel’s equipment and supplies.

5. Documentation and Compliance:
– Maintain accurate records and documentation related to navigational activities, including voyage records, passage plans, and logbook entries.
– Ensure compliance with international maritime regulations, company policies, and safety procedures.
– Assist in conducting safety inspections, audits, and assessments to identify and rectify any non-compliance issues.

Requirements:
– Valid Officer of the Watch (OOW) or higher-level deck officer certificate, as per international maritime standards.
– Experience as a deck officer, preferably with prior experience as a Third Officer or equivalent.
– Sound knowledge of navigational practices, including chart plotting, radar operation, and collision avoidance techniques.
– Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of navigation and communication equipment.
– Good understanding of safety procedures, emergency response, and firefighting techniques.
– Proficiency in using navigation software and electronic chart systems.
– Excellent communication and teamwork skills to effectively interact with crew members and other department heads.
– Ability to remain calm and make decisions in high-pressure situations.
– Flexibility to work in a dynamic and demanding environment, including extended periods at sea and irregular working hours.
