Job Description
As a Deck Cadet in the Deck department of a cruise ship or vessel, you will undergo structured training and gain practical experience to become a qualified deck officer. Your primary role is to assist and learn from senior deck officers in various deck operations, navigational tasks, and safety procedures. Here is a detailed job description for the position of Deck Cadet:
1. Training and Learning:
– Participate in a structured training program, which includes onboard training, classroom instruction, and practical experience.
– Learn and familiarize yourself with the vessel’s layout, equipment, and safety procedures.
– Assist senior deck officers in various deck operations, including watchkeeping, navigation, and cargo handling.
2. Navigational Duties:
– Stand watch on the bridge under the supervision of senior deck officers, maintaining a lookout for navigational hazards, and assisting in safe navigation.
– Assist in chart plotting, course planning, and executing navigational routes, considering factors such as weather conditions, traffic, and navigational aids.
– Maintain navigational logs and records accurately, documenting course steered, distances traveled, and any other relevant information.
3. Safety and Emergency Response:
– Learn and adhere to safety procedures and regulations to ensure the well-being of the vessel, passengers, and crew.
– Participate in safety drills and training sessions to familiarize yourself with emergency procedures and equipment.
– Assist in inspecting and maintaining life-saving appliances and firefighting equipment to ensure their proper functioning.
4. Deck Operations and Maintenance:
– Support senior deck officers in various deck operations, such as mooring, anchoring, and cargo handling.
– Assist in the maintenance and cleanliness of the vessel’s exterior, including painting, cleaning, and general maintenance tasks.

Requirements:
– Enrolled in a recognized maritime training program or maritime academy as a Deck Cadet.

– Physically fit and capable of performing manual tasks and working in various weather conditions.
