Job Description
As a Trainee Cadet in the Deck department of a cruise ship or vessel, you will undergo comprehensive training and gain practical experience to become a skilled deck officer. Your primary role is to learn and assist in various deck operations, navigational tasks, and safety procedures under the guidance of senior deck officers. Here is a detailed job description for the position of Trainee Cadet:
1. Training and Learning:
– Participate in a structured training program designed to provide you with comprehensive knowledge and skills in deck operations and navigation.
– Learn and familiarize yourself with the vessel’s layout, equipment, safety procedures, and regulatory requirements.
– Assist and shadow senior deck officers in various deck activities, watchkeeping, and navigation tasks.
2. Navigational Duties:
– Under the supervision of senior deck officers, maintain a vigilant lookout for navigational hazards and assist in safe navigation.
– Learn chart plotting, course planning, and executing navigational routes, taking into consideration weather conditions, traffic, and navigational aids.
– Observe and participate in maintaining navigational logs and records accurately.
3. Safety and Emergency Response:
– Acquire knowledge of safety procedures and regulations to ensure the well-being of the vessel, passengers, and crew.
– Participate in safety drills and training sessions to familiarize yourself with emergency procedures and the proper use of safety equipment.
– Assist in inspecting and maintaining life-saving appliances and firefighting equipment to ensure their proper functioning.
4. Deck Operations and Maintenance:
– Support senior deck officers in various deck operations, including mooring, anchoring, and cargo handling.
– Learn and participate in the maintenance and cleanliness of the vessel’s exterior, assisting in tasks such as painting, cleaning, and general maintenance.
– Collaborate with deck crew members to ensure proper organization and stowage of equipment and supplies.
5. Documentation and Compliance:
– Assist in maintaining accurate records and documentation related to deck operations, navigational activities, safety procedures, and maintenance tasks.
– Learn and ensure compliance with international maritime regulations, company policies, and safety procedures.
– Support senior officers in conducting inspections and audits to identify and rectify any non-compliance issues.
Requirements:
– Enrolled in a recognized maritime training program or maritime academy as a Trainee Cadet.
– Basic understanding of navigational principles and safety procedures.
– Good communication skills to effectively interact with crew members and follow instructions from senior officers.
– Willingness to learn and demonstrate a strong work ethic.
– Physical fitness and the ability to perform manual tasks and work in various weather conditions.
– Flexibility to work in a dynamic and demanding environment, including extended periods at sea and irregular working hours.
