Job Description
As a Safety Officer in the Deck department of a cruise ship or vessel, your primary responsibility will be to ensure the safety and security of the vessel, passengers, and crew. You will play a crucial role in implementing and enforcing safety policies and procedures, conducting inspections, and promoting a culture of safety onboard. Here is a detailed job description for the position of Safety Officer:
1. Safety Management:
– Develop, implement, and update safety management systems and procedures in accordance with international maritime regulations and company policies.
– Conduct regular safety inspections and audits to identify potential hazards, non-compliance issues, and areas for improvement.
– Collaborate with other departments to address safety concerns and develop appropriate solutions.
2. Emergency Response:
– Assist in creating and maintaining emergency response plans and procedures, ensuring they are readily accessible and understood by all crew members.
– Conduct regular emergency drills and training sessions to familiarize the crew with emergency procedures and equipment.
– Act as a liaison with external emergency services and coordinate their involvement in emergency scenarios.
3. Incident Investigation:
– Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-miss events, identifying root causes and contributing factors.
– Prepare detailed incident reports, highlighting recommendations for preventive measures and corrective actions.
– Track and monitor the implementation of recommendations to prevent recurrence.
4. Safety Training and Awareness:
– Organize and deliver safety training programs for crew members, covering topics such as personal safety, fire prevention, and evacuation procedures.
– Promote a culture of safety by conducting safety awareness campaigns, distributing safety bulletins, and organizing safety-related events.
– Provide guidance and support to crew members on safety-related matters and encourage reporting of safety concerns.
5. Safety Equipment and Systems:
– Ensure that all safety equipment, including life-saving appliances, fire-fighting equipment, and personal protective gear, is properly maintained, inspected, and readily available.
– Monitor the functioning of safety systems, such as fire detection and suppression systems, ensuring regular testing and maintenance.
– Coordinate with suppliers and contractors for the procurement, installation, and maintenance of safety equipment.
6. Documentation and Compliance:
– Maintain accurate records and documentation related to safety management, inspections, training, and incident reports.
– Ensure compliance with international maritime regulations, flag state requirements, and industry standards.
– Assist in the preparation and submission of safety-related reports to relevant authorities.
Requirements:
– Valid STCW certifications, including Officer of the Watch (OOW) or higher-level deck officer certificate.
– Extensive experience in maritime safety management, preferably with prior experience in a similar role.
– In-depth knowledge of international maritime regulations and industry best practices related to safety.
– Familiarity with risk assessment techniques, incident investigation methodologies, and safety management systems.
– Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with crew members and senior officers.
– Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with a proactive approach to safety.
– Attention to detail and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
– Flexibility to work in a dynamic environment, including extended periods at sea and irregular working hours.
