Job Description

As the Third Officer onboard a cruise ship or vessel, you will be an essential member of the deck department. Working under the supervision of senior officers, you will assist in various navigational and operational tasks, contributing to the safe and efficient operation of the vessel. Here is a detailed job description for the position of Third Officer:

1. Navigational Duties:
– Stand watch on the bridge, maintaining a vigilant lookout for navigational hazards and monitoring the vessel’s position, speed, and course.
– Assist in planning and executing safe navigation, considering factors such as weather conditions, traffic, and navigational aids.
– Record voyage details, including courses steered, distances traveled, and any other relevant information in navigational logs.

2. Safety and Emergency Response:
– Contribute to the implementation and enforcement of safety procedures and regulations to ensure the well-being of the vessel, passengers, and crew.
– Participate in safety drills and training sessions to maintain preparedness for emergencies.
– Inspect and maintain life-saving appliances and firefighting equipment, ensuring their proper functioning and readiness.

3. Deck Operations:
– Assist in deck operations, such as mooring, anchoring, and tender operations.
– Support the Chief Officer and Second Officer in cargo handling and stowage activities.
– Supervise deck crew members during routine tasks, ensuring the vessel’s exterior is clean, maintained, and properly organized.

4. Bridge Equipment and Systems:
– Operate and maintain navigation and communication equipment, including radar, GPS, echo sounder, and radio systems.
– Familiarize yourself with the vessel’s navigation systems and ensure their proper functioning.
– Conduct routine maintenance and testing of bridge equipment to identify and resolve any issues.

5. Documentation and Compliance:
– Maintain accurate records and documentation related to navigational activities, including voyage records, passage plans, and logbook entries.
– Ensure compliance with international maritime regulations, company policies, and safety procedures.
– Assist in conducting safety inspections and audits to identify and rectify any non-compliance issues.

Requirements:
– Valid Officer of the Watch (OOW) or higher-level deck officer certificate, as per international maritime standards.
– Previous experience as a Junior Officer or equivalent is preferred.
– Sound knowledge of navigational practices, including chart plotting, radar operation, and collision avoidance techniques.
– Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of navigation and communication equipment.
– Understanding of safety procedures, emergency response, and firefighting techniques.
– Proficiency in using navigation software and electronic chart systems.
– Excellent communication and teamwork skills to effectively interact with crew members and other department heads.
– Ability to remain calm and make decisions in high-pressure situations.
– Flexibility to work in a dynamic and demanding environment, including extended periods at sea and irregular working hours.
